‘It didn’t do well’: Arum talks folly of putting Haney vs Prograis on PPV in December
Bob Arum says Haney vs Prograis didn’t sell well on PPV, but that’s not a true indication of Haney’s drawing ability.
Following Devin Haney’s dominant performance over Regis Prograis there’s been some rumblings about how well the fight actually sold commercially.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum talks to Fight Hype about the show, and while he wasn’t involved in putting it on, he cites his sources and understanding about how Haney vs Prograis didn’t do well in terms of PPV sales. Check out some of what he had to say below.
Arum on his understanding of how Haney vs Prograis performed on PPV
“Very, very disappointing. But again, you put a fight on first of all in December, PPV. Now what are people concerned about in December? Saving up their money so they can spend it on Christmas presents.
“The PPV is so expensive now that a lot of people that are looking to stretch their dollars to buy presents for their kids and relatives don’t want to put it into buy a fight, particularly a fight like Haney vs Regis Prograis which is not a huge once in a lifetime attraction.
“And so the fact it did so poorly is not really a reflection on Haney’s marketability, it’s just a fight that took place at the wrong time against fights that were free to air on other platforms like ESPN.
“We had a terrific, terrific featherweight championship match that was a huge upset against it. So the fact it didn’t do well doesn’t mean that Devin Haney’s not a PPV draw. But it didn’t do well.”
