Woman Told She 'Betrayed' Sister After Learning She Was Pregnant & Being Sworn to Secrecy, But the Situation Was More Complex

A woman is feeling conflicted and concerned about her relationship with her sister after inadvertently spilling her pregnancy news.

Taking to Reddit‘s popular “Am I the A—–” forum, the 24-year-old woman explained that her 21-year-old sister let her know that she was pregnant two months prior and swore her to secrecy.

However, the Redditor was beginning to feel the pressure when confronted by their “pretty traditional” and “judgmental” parents. In a tense moment, she answered a question that sent the family reeling.

Now she wants to know if she was in the wrong, and her fellow Redditors are split down the middle.

In her post, she said that she “accidentally” spilled the news to her parents.

The woman explained that her sister’s pregnancy “wasn’t planned,” and the younger woman was “freaking out” about their parents’ reactions.

“She made me promise not to tell anyone. Like full you cannot say a word until I’m ready serious. I agreed but I was hesitant about it,” the Redditor admitted.

As the weeks went by, she wrote that the situation began to become difficult as their parents became suspicious.

“My mom kept making comments to me about how my sister has been ‘moody’ and ‘gaining weight’ and asked if I knew what was going on. Every time, I had to pretend I didn’t. I started getting tired of keeping this up quickly,” she recalled, adding that her sister wasn’t sharing many pregnancy updates but still “expected me to cover for her constantly.”

Because of the situation, the woman wrote, “I was lying to keep her cover but I had no idea what was going on and I felt used.”

Things came to a head when their mother directly confronted the woman and asked if her sister was pregnant.

“I hesitated and finally gave in, ‘I think you should talk to her,’ ” the admitted, saying that the reaction “obviously confirmed” the news.

This led to “a huge blow-up fight” between the pregnant sister and her mom. Now the sister feels “betrayed” and like the Redditor “stole the chance for her to tell [their parents] on her own terms.

“I told her I didn’t outright say she was pregnant I just didn’t deny it. And honestly, I was tired of carrying the secret around my parents,” the woman said, adding that her sister has now iced her out.

In an update, the woman informed readers that she “very clearly” told her sister that she was concerned about keeping the secret since their “mom was getting suspicious.” She also informed her pregnant sis that she “could not keep this up for much longer.”

She said that the situation was “eating away at me.”

“Her response? It doesn’t matter and she doesn’t care how uncomfortable I feel it’s her decision and not fair to her,” she wrote.

“From my point of view, it was unfair to put me in this position in the first place. As for being involved, she appeased me with vague updates once a week through a couple words on text. No solid plans for moving forward. I was just tired and done with it,” the sister added.

Now, she’s feeling conflicted: “Part of me feels guilty because I did promise. But another part of me feels like I shouldn’t have been put in that position in the first place.”

It turns out that everyone on Reddit was equally conflicted about the situation.

One commenter replied that they were ready to tell the original poster that she was an a——. But they changed their mind after reading the full post.

“Clearly it was becoming increasingly obvious. It had been two months. The changes were apparently noticeable. If you had told your mom no, she probably would have known you were directly lying, and that wouldn’t do anyone any good,” the Redditor wrote, saying that the mom was clearly aware of the situation.

They continued, adding, “I understand why your sister is mad, but it’s kind of on her. Two months is too long to keep it going under those circumstances.”

In their opinion the situation makes the pregnant sister “someone who failed to figure out an effective plan in a reasonable amount of time before it would be obvious.”

Another person agreed, saying that they could have kept the secret for a few weeks.

“Two months?! Sis will be showing pretty soon so the jig will be up anyway. She roped OP in and then made it their problem,” they wrote, prompting the original poster to reply, “This is how I feel I just don’t understand what her game plan was to do, I kept it for as long as I myself could, I’m human, and I’m just not a liar.”

Others strongly disagreed.

One person wrote that the sister was clearly in the wrong, explaining, “I’m just a believer that if somebody asks you to be quiet about something and keep their secret, you do it (unless that secret is something awful or threatening to somebody else).”

“Your mom had her suspicions, but you should give people the right to speak for themselves on their own terms. You could’ve simply just said, ‘I don’t know.’ You know what you were doing when you said, ‘I think you should talk to her,’ lol,” they added.

Yet another person wrote that the Redditor was “just itching to out her sister.”

Another subset of commenters decided that someone else was in the wrong — the women’s parents.

Writing that the woman wasn’t at fault, someone added, “Your mother already knew. She was way beyond suspicious. She’s the [a-----] for asking you instead of your sister.”
