Alan Dershowitz Still Can’t Buy Any Pierogi
The Martha’s Vineyard pierogi vendor that refused to sell to attorney Alan Dershowitz last week has received a swell of support — and still won’t let him have any dumplings.
Last week, Dershowitz took to social media to declare his plans to sue the West Tisbury Farmers Market after he got into a verbal altercation with the owners of Good Pierogi after they declined to sell a half-dozen pierogi to him. He called it “pure McCarthyism.”
He then tried again yesterday but left pierogiless. In a video shared by the Martha’s Vineyard Times, Dershowitz approaches the stand once again on Wednesday, then asks chef and co-owner Krem Miskevich to sell him pierogi to show that he won’t allow their “anti-Zionism to decide which people you’ll sell to.”
At times, Dershowitz was heckled by the crowd of supporters surrounding the stand as he attempted to debate Miskevich and offered a copy of a signed book. (They turned him down.) According to the Vineyard Gazette, the book was entitled The Ten Big Anti-Israel Lies, which Dershowitz inscribed with the message, “Please learn the truth.” The attorney was later escorted away from the booth by the market’s manager as members of the assembled crowd chanted “time to go.”
The Times reports that Good Pierogi received a steady stream of customers with many patrons lining up at the food stall prior to the market’s opening, prompting sell-outs of some of its menu items.
In a statement published on Tuesday, Miskevich defended Good Pierogi’s “legally justified decision” not to sell to Dershowitz, referencing some of his past legal clients including former NFL star O.J. Simpson and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
“Mr. Dershowitz consciously decided to befriend and defend men who have been accused of abusing and harming women. The food we make is a labor of love, it’s our craft. In our minds and hearts, selling to Alan Dershowitz was the equivalent to supporting his decisions and statements,” Miskevich wrote.
The statement ended on a more tongue-in-cheek note, suggesting that Good Pierogi’s wares might just be too good for Dershowitz to resist. “The level of effort Mr. Dershowitz is investing in this charade has led us to a singular conclusion: Our handcrafted pierogi, made with love from locally sourced ingredients, are so undeniably delicious, he’ll do anything to get his hands on them,” Miskevich wrote.
