Player ratings from Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Qarabag in the Europa League
Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their Europa League campaign with a crazy game in North London against Qarabag this evening – featuring three goals, a red card, and a missed penalty.
Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:
Guglielmo Vicario – 9 – Saved Tottenham from a certain goal when he came charging out to tackle the Qarabag attacker after Davies’ short backpass – it was a red if he got it wrong. After that, it was save after save from Vicario – and some of them were sublime!
Archie Gray – 8.5 – This kid looks special. So calm on the ball, but oozes quality too. You can see why he made a name for himself at right-back for Leeds last season, and the inverted nature of the role at Spurs suits him down to the ground.
Radu Dragusin – 1 – Sorry, Radu. A straight red card less than ten minutes into the game can only be a 1.
Micky Van de Ven – 8.5 – Like a Rolls Royce with Vin Diesel behind the wheel. Van de Ven is the perfect player for Ange ball and mopped up so many attacks in behind this evening. Some of his awareness in his own box was also second to none.
Ben Davies – 7.5 – Made some lovely underlapping runs to get Spurs up the pitch and generally had a solid game at centre-back, apart from that one poor touch and awful backpass. Unlike Dragusin, he at least decided not to drag his man down and take the red though.
Yves Bissouma – 8.5 – Absolutely ran the show in midfield. Spurs were a man light in the midfield battle, but Bissouma easily did the work of two players on and off the ball. Qarabag couldn’t get near him! I actually thought he was unlucky with the penalty, but it was a silly challenge to make.
Pape Matar Sarr – 8.5 – Such an underrated performance from Sarr. He is exactly the man you want on your team when you’re down to ten because he gets through so much running and pressing off the ball. Tonight was also one of his more impressive games on the ball too, capped off with that well-taken goal – a cushioned volley at the back post after an inswinging corner was half-cleared.
Lucas Bergvall – N/A – Unfortunately, Bergvall was sacrificed after ten minutes to fill the gap after Dragusin saw red. A harsh evening for the young man.
Brennan Johnson – 8 – This man cannot stop scoring! That’s three in three games across three competitions in the past week now. Not only was his finish composed, but he looks full of confidence and life down that right side now. Superb to see.
Dominic Solanke – 9 – This guy gets through a bit of work, doesn’t he? Not only is Solanke a pressing machine, but he also holds the ball up incredibly well, bringing others into play. Created the Spurs opener by picking the pocket of the Qarabag defender and rolling it into Johnson. Completely deserved his goal!
Heung-min Son – 7.5 – Didn’t get much change out of the left-back one-on-one outside, but still looked a general threat throughout the match. Got through his fair share of tracking back and defending with ten men too. His long-range effort led to Solanke’s eventual tap-in.
Substitutes:
Destiny Udogie – 8 – Considering he was thrown into the match cold, he found the tempo immediately. Udogie was superb on the ball, threatening in attack, and covered incredibly well in behind too. Stopped a certain goal at 1-0 when he tracked back and put the attacker off.
Dejan Kulusevski – 7.5 – Came on at half-time to add extra legs in midfield and got through a typically impressive shift. Such an important player to this squad.
Rodrigo Bentancur – 7 – Played out the final 25 minutes really well, keeping Spurs ticking over.
Timo Werner – 6 – Didn’t have much of a kick after coming on. Would have liked to see Mikey Moore get 25 minutes instead.
Mikey Moore – N/A – Fantastic to see him get his European debut, albeit for 10 minutes.
