Samsung Reveals Glasses-Free 3D OLED Technology

Samsung has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s first glasses-free 3D OLED display technology. The company has stated that the new technology, which was developed as a joint effort between Samsung Electronics, Samsung Research, and South Korea’s POSTECH University, presents a higher quality 3D picture than the LCD-based 3D gaming monitor it launched last year.
Samsung published the research that it used to develop the new technology in Nature, titled “Switchable 2D-3D display through a metasurface lenticular lens.” The new glasses-free 3D display is based on light field technology and utilizes ultra-thin “metalenses” (metasurface lenticular lenses) that allow quick switching between glasses-free 3D imaging and high-definition 2D. This offers a 3D viewing angle of up to 100 degrees, meaning multiple people can view the same 3D effect on the same display.
“Though long considered promising for entertainment, augmented reality (AR) and medical imaging, conventional Light Field Displays face commercialization challenges, including bulky optics, narrow viewing angles (around 15 degrees), reduced resolution, and reliance on real-time eye tracking,” explains Samsung. “The research team addressed these limitations using polarization – the direction in which light oscillates – to design a metasurface lenticular lens (MLL) that dynamically adjusts focal properties.”
