Akeredolu, others move to protect interest of southwest region in constitution amendment

- Some governors have moved to protect the interest of the southwest region in the proposed constitution amendment

- The governors - from the southwest region - said they intend to ratify their common stance on all issues billed for the constitution amendment

- Governor of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu, speaking on behalf of the governors said the collective interest of the southwest region will be well represented

Some governors from the southwest states have announced their plan to take a stance on the various issues for the deliberation in the constitution amendment that might affect the region.

The governor after a meeting in Ibadan, Oyo state said they met to ratify their common stance on all the issues billed for amendment, said the Yoruba nation is one with same destiny.

Speaking at the meeting, the Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, said the governors would not allow party politics to divide them on the issues of the constitution amended.

Although the governor did not disclose the decision taken by his colleagues, he said the collective interest of the southwest region will be protected and well represented.

Akeredolu said: “As you can see, all of us are one from Oduduwa. All of us, being brothers, are presenting the same position on matters that are of common interest of all of us and we are doing it together."

“If you are talking about specific issues, one of the issues that we tried to look at is the issue of constitution (amendment). There are many things that we have endorsed, but it is so clear to us that there is more on the issue of amendment of the constitution.

“And as expected, we know what will be our interest.

“So, we want to send a common position to our Houses of Assembly and other stakeholders who we believe can come along with us on the issues that we have agreed on, that we believe that are of our common interest."

Governors present at the meeting include Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Akinwumi Ambode (Lagos), Rauf Aregbesola (Osun) and Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti).

However, the Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, was represented by the deputy governor, Yetunde Onanuga.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Nigerian Senate said senators would be using electronic voting system for the the constitution review.

The Senate said all senators will be required to vote according to the wishes of their constituents.

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, also said the voting will be issue free because it's up for public review.
