Locals Are Outraged That Portobello Plaza Will Be Replaced With A Hotel
Dubliners have started an online petition to save Portobello Plaza from being replaced with a 178 bedroom hotel. Planning Permission for development of a new hotel has been applied for by the developers, and it would see the current building and public plaza area become a six-storey hotel. The 'Save Portobello Harbour' petition has almost 3,600 signatures, and says that "the scale of the proposed building and it’s over-barring impact on its neighbors will over develop the sight & create traffic congestion in the area and use the public plaza as its own courtyard.""The development of a 178 bed hotel on the site will undoubtably restrict locals and those who are not using the hotels services from using this public space for markets, skateboarding, biking, ball games & all other activities that occur here on a regular basis, as well as those using the canal to relax on summer evenings after a days work."
