Lagos police sacks 9 officers, demotes 25 others for improper conduct

- The Lagos state police command said the 9 policemen and demoted 25 others found guilty of various offences

- State police public relations officer SP Chike Oti the police personnel were punished for various disciplinary offences between the months of September and December 2017

- The commissioner of police Imohinmi said the punishment would serve as deterrent to other officers who may want to toe the path of public shame

The Lagos State police command, on Tuesday, January 2, said it has dismissed nine policemen found culpable of various offences and demoted 25 others for offences bordering on gross insubordination, incivility and drunkenness among others, Punch reports.

According to a statement by the state police public relations officer SP Chike Oti, 60 rank and files also faced disciplinary action for misconduct.

The statement read: “In keeping with the promise he (the commissioner of police) made to the good people of Lagos state on assumption of office that there will be no room for corrupt and indisciplined police officers under his watch, the Lagos state police command hereby releases to the general public the breakdown in figures, of police personnel punished for various disciplinary offences between the months of September and December 2017 as follows:

“Nine officers were dismissed for offences ranging from discreditable conduct, corrupt practices, disobedience to lawful order and falsehood.

“Twenty five were reduced in rank for offences ranging from gross insubordination, drunkenness, incivility to members of the public and leaving (their) beat.

“A total of 60 inspectors and rank and files were awarded the punishments of major and minor entries.

“The commissioner of police said the punishments handed down to the unruly officers would serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to toe the path of ignominy.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Kogi state police command dismissed three of its officers for their alleged involvement in the trafficking of 30 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.

The command’s public relations officer William Aya who confirmed this in Lokoja said that the officers were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for prosecution.

According to him, the officers were dismissed after they were found guilty by a board room trial conducted by the police.
