Sharpton, school survivor, announce anti-gun violence rally
NEW YORK (AP) — A survivor of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting joined the Rev. Al Sharpton at the activist's Harlem headquarters to announce a June rally against gun violence at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.
Aalayah Eastmond, a junior at Stoneman Douglas High School, was at Sharpton's National Action Network for the minister's weekly Saturday morning meetings.
Sixteen-year-old Eastmond was in class on Feb. 14 when a gunman fired through a window, sparing her but eventually killing 17 people.
The June 2nd rally is planned for Fifth Avenue in front of President Donald Trump's apartment building. Another Sharpton concern is how police handle interactions with the mentally ill.
