Gary Nicklaus, son of a legend, takes shot at US Amateur in Pebble Beach
Gary Nicklaus is 49, too young to carry much personal recollection of his father’s long, storied history at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Jack Nicklaus won the U.S. Amateur there in 1961, more than seven years before Gary was born. Jack also won the U.S. Open at Pebble in 1972, when young Gary was all of 3.
Now, all these years later, the Nicklaus family is planning a nostalgic return to the Monterey Peninsula. Gary Nicklaus qualified for this week’s U.S. Amateur, which begins Monday with stroke play at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill.
