What counts as a true shamrock, and why is it a St. Patrick’s symbol?

Today, revellers will be out in their droves partying across the world for St. Patrick’s Day.

In many people’s minds it’s simply a day to drink Guinness and Whiskey and put on a fun hat. However, there’s actually a lot of significance – religious and cultural – that day outside on simply having fun.

The day represents St. Patrick and his triumph in converting the pagans of Ireland to Christianity. The debauchery itself even comes from the fact that the fast of Lent is allowed to be broken on this day to honour St. Patrick.

There’s one thing that also may seem insignificant about St. Patrick’s Day; the plethora of shamrocks everywhere. Aside from being just a pretty Irish symbol, however, there’s a lot of meaning in those tiny leaves.

How is a shamrock different to a clover?

In terms of botany, there are different arguments on what makes a shamrock.

A shamrock is technically in the clover family, but it must have three leaves to bear the name.

Most tend to agree that it’s probably the white clover (Trifolium repens) that’s referred to as a shamrock.

What is the significance of the shamrock?

The three leaves is very important, as each one recommends one part of the holy trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

Legend has it that St. Patrick used the abundant clovers in Ireland to teach people about Christianity, meaning it’s become an enduring symbol of the day.

Nowadays on the day you’ll see shamrocks galore; and you’ll likely have one on the head of your Guinness.
