World-record crowd watches women’s clash between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona
A NEW world record was set today as over 60,000 people attended a women’s club football match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.
The jam-packed crowd crammed into the 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano after the tie was switched due to demand for tickets.
Atletico usually play their home games at the club’s training ground.
But they were forced to move the showdown due to popularity.
And that meant 60,739 watched on as the hosts slipped to a 2-0 defeat courtesy of goals from Asisat Oshoala and England international Toni Duggan.
The result has now re-opened the title race, with Barca closing the gap on leaders Atletico to three points with only six matches remaining.
The booming crowd continues the recent rise in popularity for the women’s game in Spain.
Just last month Athletic Bilbao attracted a previous club best of 48,121 for their Copa de la Reina game against Atletico at San Mames.
Atletico Club members were given free tickets for the tie while the rest were available for £4.25.

A spokesman told ESPN over 40 per cent of the crowd were there on paid for tickets.
The bumper attendance still falls short of the world record figure for a women’s football match.
That was set way back in 1999 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, America.
A huge 90,185 people attended the World Cup final between USA and China.
