The Gujarat High Court has refused to stay the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case. Gandhi's legal team, headed by Abhishek Singhvi, said they would appeal to the Supreme Court. The judge said that "there is no reasonable ground to stay the conviction of the applicant in the facts and circumstances of the case”. He also noted that the accused is a Member of Parliament and so must have a "bounden duty” not to harm others in society. Ten other criminal cases are also pending against Gandhi.
