Even wild animals’ skin can burn, if they’re living in unusual conditions.
I remember years ago eating lunch with my father and his financial advisor. I stated what I thought was an indisputable fact. I said history suggests that stock markets can not only go down but stay down for many, many years. I cited the 1966 top in U.S. stocks and the secular bear market that ensued and lasted until 1982. He asked me if I was recommending that investors bet against America. I said I wouldn't put it that way. I explained that the world was moving toward an era of energy scarcity... Читать дальше...

Clostridioides difficile is a gram-positive, pathogenic bacterium and is currently the leading cause of hospital-acquired, infectious diarrhea in the United States. During infection, C. difficile produces and secretes up to three toxins called Toxin A, Toxin B, and the C. difficile transferase (CDT). While Toxin A and Toxin B are thought to drive the pathology associated with the disease, strains that produce CDT have been linked to increased disease severity... Читать дальше...

This study employed state-of-the-art machine learning to evaluate the mortality effects of alpha-emitting radionuclides (241Am, 249Cf, 252Cf, 238Pu, 239Pu, 224Ra, 226Ra, 228Th) on 2,576 dogs, factoring in radioactivity levels, composition, administration method (injection or inhalation), and age at exposure. There were 972 cancer deaths, 599 non-cancer deaths, 789 deaths from many diseases (involving several diagnoses, including both cancer and non-cancer pathologies)... Читать дальше...

This study proposes a UT-type prefabricated joint incorporating adjustable sleeves (±5 mm tolerance) and an energy-dissipating segment to address the practical demands for construction tolerance management and plasticity assurance. Through systematic static and cyclic loading tests, the paper examines the mechanical behavior of UT-type joints under the combined axial force and bending moment. The results demonstrate that axial force significantly influences joint performance. Читать дальше...

Chloride channel accessory 1 (CLCA1) is considered a potential prognostic biomarker for colon adenocarcinoma (COAD). The objective of this research was to develop two pathomics models to predict CLCA1 expression from hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) stained pathological images and to investigate the biological mechanisms linked to pathomics features by associating the pathomics model with transcriptomic data. The prognostic value of CLCA1... Читать дальше...

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a major cause of end-stage renal disease globally, with podocytes being implicated in its pathogenesis. However, the underlying mechanisms of podocyte involvement remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to identify podocyte molecular markers associated with DKD using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from patients with early DKD. Through enrichment analysis, subcluster clustering... Читать дальше...

Doctoral student experience and outcomes largely depend on the quality of supervision. Research on doctoral supervision usually focuses on the attributes, styles, and roles of a supervisor during doctoral training, while the process and effects of initiating supervisor-supervisee relationships remain less explored. This paper aims to examine how students’ strategies for supervisor selection are related to subsequent difficulties in interaction with their... Читать дальше...

ObjectivesHematological malignancies (HMs) pose a severe threat to human health and contribute substantially to the disease burden in mainland China and Taiwan. Therefore, understanding their burden is crucial for informed decision-making and the effective allocation of healthcare resources.
MethodsThis study utilized the latest data from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study to describe the epidemiological indices... Читать дальше...

The rapid development of edge computing and artificial intelligence has brought growing interest in collaborative training. While prior research has addressed technical aspects of resource allocation, less attention has been paid to the underlying economic mechanisms of resource trading. In this study, we examine how task publishers can effectively allocate budgets between computational and data resources during co-training. To address the uncertainty in data acquisition... Background and objectiveDespite advances in intensive care, sepsis remains a leading cause of mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, especially middle-aged and elderly individuals. Given the limitations of conventional scoring systems and the interpretability challenges of machine learning models, this study aims to develop and temporally validate a nomogram for predicting 28-day ICU mortality in middle-aged and elderly sepsis patients via the eICU database (2014--2015)...
