Occasional Fishing from a Wenonah Prospector 15
My recent purchase of the WP15 (which I've been enjoying immensely) prioritized downriver tandem and solo jaunts over fishing. The gent who sold it to me owns one and spoke of standing and fly fishing from it the weekend before. I am not there. I am an indifferent freshwater angler (spinning, not fly), primarily in it for my 13-year-old because he expressed an interest, although his interest managed to spark mine enough to invest in proper tackle. We've poked around a bit from shore before the canoe purchase, never having caught anything, since I'm still learning about jigs and lures and whatnot and it was a hot summer, so the fish were all at the unreachable depths. So I don't know how it will go when I eventually give it a whirl at a local reservoir from the Prospector. I am hoping not to permanently put him off all things water-related. Avoiding a hook in my anatomy would also be considered a plus. I might try it alone to start before I bring the boy in on it.
My main question involves rod holders, but I'm more broadly curious about practical stuff management for a day on flat water. I am considering a couple of the clamp-on type rod holders I can plunk on, or perhaps the vertical type on one side of a cooler, although I only want a small duffle-type cooler if anything. My rods are 7-ft. but I have a 6-foot I can set up if the 7-ft length proves awkward. I'm not terribly keen on trolling lines, just casting about for panfish or the odd bass, catch-and-release to start. Eventually, if he were to get enthusiastic about it, I could see getting him his own fishing kayak and submit to the latest thing for him anyway. He is already my height (5'11") and 11 stone to my 14, so if you are thinking that 15 ft is a bit short for what I'm describing, I wouldn't disagree, but like I said, fishing was down on the list of priorities, more of a "nice-to-have" than a "must-have." I have strong make-do proclivities, but I also want to avoid a rod rolling about under my knees.
My frustration, and the reason I bring it to the forum, is that any related web searches leave me bombarded with "ultimate fishing kayaks" and "epic adventures" and Amazon hegemony and so forth. I am just looking for one or two sensible suggestions I can apply without too much outlay of blood and treasure.
