Burger King staff refused to read menu to blind woman with nut allergy

A blind woman with a severe nut allergy said she was ‘shocked’ when Burger King staff told her they could not read out a list of ingredients.

Medina Hall popped into the Folkestone branch and asked workers to read the ingredients in a brownie because her allergy can trigger asthma attacks.

She claims staff said they could give her a menu – but said company policy stipulates customers must read it themselves.

Burger King said in a statement that ‘there is no such policy’ and confirmed they ‘are looking into this matter further’.

‘I was shocked. Had I eaten it and it had nuts in, I would’ve had a major asthma attack and ended up in hospital,’ Ms Hall told the BBC.

‘In today’s day and age you’d think they would want to read it and get it right.’

A Burger King spokesman said: ‘We would firstly like to apologise to Medina, her experience this week is not reflective of the high standards we would expect within any of our restaurants.

‘Everyone should have an enjoyable experience when they visit us and we are looking into this matter further.’

The spokesman also confirmed ‘that there is no such policy to refrain from reading allergen information to visually-impaired customers’.

Ms Hall called for restaurants to provide menus in alternative formats ‘so that we can be independent and read it ourselves’.
