California fires – 90,000 evacuate and 2.4million face blackouts as ‘extreme’ winds fan deadly blazes

WILDFIRES in California have forced 90,000 people to evacuate and 2.4million people face blackouts as “extreme” winds fuel the blaze.

The Kincade fire has been fuelled by strong winds and has yet to be contained, officials said.

A huge chunk of the Northern California wine region were told to evacuate last night.

The National Weather Service said winds topped 90mph on Sunday morning in Healdsburg Hills North.

Winds could lead to “erratic fire behaviour” and send embers for miles, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has warned.

Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said pleaded with residents in the 10 evacuation zones to follow orders.

Essick said: “I’m seeing people reporting that they’re going to stay and fight this fire.

“You cannot fight this. Please evacuate.”

Orders were expanded to Santa Rosa on Sunday morning as the state’s largest utility company shut power to 2.35million people to prevent more wildfires.

The Kincade fire started on Wednesday night and has burned at least 40-square miles and it is only 11 per cent contained.

The National Weather Service says wind gusts topped 90 mph Sunday morning in Healdsburg Hills North.

There are fears gusts could knock down power lines and spark more wildfires prompted two blackouts in recent weeks.

Pacific Gas & Electric started shutting off power Saturday last night for an estimated 2.35million people across 38 counties.

The city of San Francisco was not in line for a blackout amid shut-offs for most of the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area, the wine country to the north and the Sierra foothills.

PG&E cast blackouts as public safety efforts to prevent fires from devastating communities and spreading.

Andrew Vesey, CEO of Pacific Gas & Electric Co., said: “Any spark, from any source, can lead to catastrophic results. We do not want to become one of those sources.”

The Kincade fire burned 77 buildings, including 31 homes, and swept through more than 40 square miles of the wine region by last night and is about 11 per cent contained.

A hero firefighter shielded two people from flames with this fire shelter and all three were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries, Cal Fire said.

Firefighters also battled flames in Southern California.

The Tick Fire, which is about 55 per cent contained, destroyed 18 structures in the Santa Clarita area north of Los Angeles.

Nearly all the 50,000 residents were ordered to evacuate, but were able to come back home after the winds died down.

Sheriff’s officials said human remains were found within the burn area, but it’s unclear if the death is connected to the blaze.

One residents found homes destroyed on his streeet.

Marcos Briano, 71, said: “I’m thankful that nothing happened to my house, but I feel bad for my neighbours.”
