Political system
Qatar is a principality (emirate). According to the interim constitution of 1970, the head of state is the emir (of the ruling As-Sani family). Executive power is exercised by the government and the prime minister appointed by the Emir. The 35-member Advisory Council is a government consultative body. There is no parliament or political parties.
