DC's BLACK CANARY: IGNITE Graphic Novel Gets Official Trailer

Fans just can't get enough of the heroine Black Canary, whether it's the spinoff Green Arrow and The Canaries TV show, or DC's upcoming graphic novel for middle grade readers: Black Canary: Ignite, coming to book stores before the month is over.

The new graphic novel arrives on October 29th, providing a new take on the heroine's origin story, courtesy of writer Meg Cabot (New York Times bestselling author of The Princess Diaries) in her first graphic novel endeavor, joined by artist Cara McGee (Dodge City). In what seems to be an attempt to honor the original, but largely removed-from-continuity origin of Black Canary, Ignite is said to be a "mother-daughter story" chronicling the struggles of growing up, and growing out. The story will follow Dinah when she is still a middle schooler, balancing her need to win the Battle of the Bands AND her father's respect, joining up with the Gotham City Junior Police Academy. And if that description leaves any doubt about the attitude of the book, the new official trailer should take care of it.

The series looks to follow on the heels of the similarly de-aged origin story of Harley Quinn in Breaking Glass. That story was an incredibly pleasant and modern surprise, and the music video trailer--featuring a song from the book, written by Cabot--shows Black Canary: Ignite could break even more new ground, as well. Take a look:

The trailer offers interested readers more than just a rendition of "Ignite" by Dinah and her band, revealing the villain of the book. Referred to by the name 'Bonfire,' it's the pyromaniacal antagonist who seem to force Dinah into adopting her costumed identity. While it may not be a "canonical" origin story where the larger DC Comics Universe is concerned, there's no question Ignite will catch the attention of many a middle grade reader.

Thirteen-year-old Dinah Lance knows exactly what she wants, who she is, and where she’s going. She plans on winning the battle of the bands with her two best friends, then she’ll join the junior police academy to solve crimes just like her dad. When a mysterious figure keeps getting in the way of Dinah’s goals and threatens her friends and family, she’ll learn more about herself and her mother’s secret past, and about navigating the various power chords of life. This magnetic story features expressive and energetic art by Cara McGee to match the trademark attitude and spunk of Meg Cabot’s characters and dialogue.

Black Canary: Ignite is available to pre-order now and will hit stores everywhere books are sold on October 29th, 2019.
