Vertonghen strikes at the death as Tottenham claim stunning win at Wolves
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen struck in second-half stoppage time to give Jose Mourinho’s side a stunning 2-1 victory away at Wolves on Sunday.
Lucas Moura struck after eight minutes to give Jose Mourinho’s men the perfect start but Adama Traore – who was a constant threat against Vertonghen – eventually made it 1-1 after 67 minutes.
At the death, Vertonghen then got his revenge for being bullied all game by heading home Christian Eriksen’s corner.
Moura’s goal came after he picked up a loose ball and drove into the Wolves penalty area before finding space between two defenders and rifling a shot into the roof of Rui Patricio’s net.
Traore came to life shortly after, though. The Spaniard began to pose a threat when he beat his man and sent in a dangerous cross which – after a deflection – could have ended up anywhere.
The equaliser came when Traore ran at a backtracking Vertonghen and decided to unleash a shot from 20 yards, which was powered past Paulo Gazzaniga.
Spurs did have chances to extend their lead to two – including when Dele Alli fired wide on the counter-attack – but it was Vertonghen who had the last laugh to give his side a crucial three points.
