Readers share images of their fireplace mantels

Fireplaces, whether they are grand or modest, brick, stone or tile, move up in prominence this time of year. If a fire burns in the hearth, we're drawn to it for warmth when we come in from the cold. When guests arrive, we might ask them to sit by the fire for a cup of coffee or tea and a chat. And of course, all eyes turn to a fireplace when Santa comes to town.

A fireplace mantel is a focal point year-round, matched with the fridge for displaying kids' art work, photos and cherished keepsakes. As a focal point, it's especially fun to decorate during the holidays, whether it's a seasonal display or a scene tied to one of the holidays celebrated in the winter. We asked Spaces readers to send in pictures of their mantels and the submissions show the range of tastes and creativity in our area.

Laura Franz of Feura Bush wrote, "This mantel is about my family, our traditions and all the fondest memories of Christmas."

Franz's mantel is decorated with vintage milk glass that belonged to her grandmother, paper houses made by a sister and stockings embroidered by an aunt.

In Saratoga Springs, Paul Viscusi picks a different theme each year for the mantel in his family's home, featuring figures made with photographs of his loved ones. Last year it was Whoville from Dr. Seuss. The year before that, the Viscusi family was all aboard a big train made out of recycled materials. This year, wrote Viscusi's daughter Christiana, his theme is the spirit of Christmas with a sleigh ride and horses.

"He built the barn, stable, sleigh and covered bridge as well as some of the smaller pieces," Christiana wrote. "It's a really fun tradition all of my family looks forward to each year and he has a lot of fun planning and building it."
