Frozen 2 Becomes Sixth Disney Movie This Year To Make $1 Billion
Disney's Frozen 2 has officially hit $1 billion at the box office, becoming the sixth film from the Mouse House to do so this year. The highly-anticipated animated sequel saw the return of Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) as they set out on a quest to uncover the source of Elsa's power, along with what happened to their parents. The film has already broken a number of records since its release on November 22, including setting a new opening weekend box office record for Disney Animation.
Frozen 2 was just another wildly successful notch in Disney's belt following a banner year in theaters. Last week even set a monumental new record for the company, as it was revealed that Disney earned a whopping $10 billion at the worldwide box office this year and became the first studio in history to do so. The company's success truly comes as no surprise, considering this year has seen the release of major productions such as Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Coincidentally, all of these films, along with Captain Marvel and Toy Story 4, crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. Now, Frozen 2 is set to be joining the billion-dollar club alongside them.
According to Deadline, Frozen 2 hit $1 billion globally on Saturday, making it Disney's sixth film to do so this year. The international box office has made "$666M with $366.5M domestic for a worldwide cume of $1.033 billion." The first Frozen took "15 weeks to get to $1B," whereas its highly-anticipated sequel has done it in "just four frames." Frozen 2 also marks Disney Animation's 3rd billion-dollar hit "alongside Frozen and Zootopia" along with being the "7th biggest animated release of all time worldwide." Not to mention, it's also the "highest-grossing animated title of all time in Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Bosnia, Romania, Serbia, the UAE and Ukraine," along with being the "2nd highest-grossing animated title ever in India."
Despite these incredible box office accomplishments, the filmmakers behind Frozen 2 have expressed that a third film isn't in the cards at the moment. The film's directors, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, have expressed that both Frozen and Frozen 2 serve as one full story that now feels like a complete journey. Even if this is the case, the success of Frozen 2 has been beneficial to the box office in a number of different ways. Mainly, it provided a much-needed boost following a rather quiet fall movie season. The holidays have certainly picked up box office numbers, and it's definitely not over yet for the Mouse House either.
Disney still has the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker coming up this weekend, which will surely pull in some monumental numbers once again for the Mouse House. Although opening weekend projections are lower than expected, that could all change fairly quickly. It wouldn't be surprising to see The Rise of Skywalker cross the $1 billion mark. But, regardless if it does or not, six billion-dollar films at the box office this year is still an unbelievable accomplishment for Disney. Not to mention, Frozen 2 is a worthy and welcome addition to the club.
