“The celebrations said it all” – Vertonghen speaks on his late winner and the scenes that followed
Tottenham Hotspur had Jan Vertonghen to thank after they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in injury time.
After being rested for the midweek trip to Bayern Munich, Vertonghen was recalled to the starting eleven by Jose Mourinho with Danny Rose not even given a place on the bench.
Vertonghen had a difficult evening on the left side of the Spurs defence after finding himself up against Wolves’ speedster Adama Traoré.
The Belgian met Christian Eriksen’s late corner kick and headed it down and beyond Wolves keeper Rui Patricio and into the bottom corner of the net to spark memorable scenes on the pitch and in the away end.
After the match, Vertonghen spoke to the club’s official Twitter account and stated that the celebrations showed how much the victory meant for the players.
Next up for Spurs is the visit of Chelsea to North London and victory for Jose Mourinho over his former side will see them draw level on points in the Premier League.
