Quakes rally to beat Galaxy in Clasico
The San Jose Earthquakes scored three unanswered goals spanning both halves to seal a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the California Clasico before more than 50,000 fans at Stanford Stadium on Saturday night.
A strong defensive performance and the three goals were enough against the defending MLS champions, who had scored five goals in each of their previous two games.
Wondolowski’s goal was his last big moment before he leaves for U.S. national team duty in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The tournament begins July 7, and the Quakes’ leading scorer could be gone through July 26 if the United States makes the final.
Goodson redirected a corner from the near side of the net and sent the header in to make the score 2-1 in the 53rd minute.
“We’re confident in our defensive shape, and we defend with 11 guys so (the Galaxy’s offense) didn’t bother us one bit,” Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham said.
The outcome could signal a turnaround for the Quakes, who defeated the second-place Seattle Sounders 2-0 on June 20 after failing to get an MLS win since May 16.
