Groom dies and 111 guests test positive for coronavirus after wedding

A groom died two days after his wedding in which 111 guests tested positive for coronavirus.

The man, 26, had been suffering from Covid-19 symptoms before he got married in Bihar, India, on June 15. It is not clear whether he died from the virus, as his body was cremated before tests could be completed, AFP reports.

He had previously been admitted to hospital for a short time but was discharged before the wedding. A relative said he had wished to cancel the ceremony but his family had advised against it due to the ‘huge financial losses’ it would cause.

Bihar’s capital chief medical officer has now confirmed that all the guests in attendance have been ‘identified and isolated’ after 111 people tested positive for the virus, most of whom were asymptomatic.

Raj Kishor Chaudhary said those who also attended the groom’s funeral would need to self-isolate. Neither the bride nor any of the groom’s relatives tested positive for the disease, he added.

It is thought around 300 people were at the wedding and around 200 people attended the funeral. An investigation has now been launched into social distancing violations at the two gatherings.

Current restrictions in India only allow 50 guests at weddings, and 20 people at funerals. The country has seen more than 17,000 people die with coronavirus, while at least 600,000 people have been infected.

Most businesses and other workplaces in India began reopening at the start of June as the country ended its two month long lockdown. Domestic flights have also resumed, while hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and places of worship were given the green light on June 8.
