Tottenham ‘ready’ to bid for €40m striker, but compromise needed
Tottenham are preparing a bid for Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, but the asking price is a problem, according to reports.
Spurs are on the lookout for attacking reinforcements this summer. Harry Kane is currently the only out-and-out centre-forward in their squad.
Although they do have other players who can cover as a striker – such as Son Heung-Min – Jose Mourinho wants another option up front. And Milik may be their man.
The Polish striker is out of contract at Napoli in 2021. Given his reluctance to sign a new deal, the Serie A side want rid of him this summer.
Even if he does stay until the end of his contract, they will only offer him a bit-part role. But Napoli are under pressure to sell now due to high spending on their own signings, so Milik is likely to leave.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Tottenham and Juventus are the two main contenders for his signature. But with the latter undergoing a change of coach recently, their interest in the forward may not be as strong.
Spurs do intend to pursue Milik, though, with the report saying they are “ready to invest” in him. Their spending will not stretch to Napoli’s demands for the player, though, as the Italians want €40m.
That’s a high price to pay for someone who is out of contract in less than a year. Hence, Spurs want to negotiate it down before considering a move.
The Italian newspaper adds that they could find a compromise with Napoli in the region of €30m – potentially even lower than that.
Milik scored 11 goals in 26 Serie A games – just 19 of which were starts – in 2019-20. He is two goals shy of bringing up a half century of goals for the club he joined from Ajax in 2016.
