Thalia, Marc Anthony & More Latin Artists Who Had No. 1 Billboard Hits 20 Years Ago
With artists such as Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Anuel AA topping the Billboard Latin charts back-to-back, there’s no doubt that reggaeton and Latin trap music are dominating the new era.
In recent years, many mainstream artists have tapped into the Latin world, giving life to bilingual bops such as the recently-released “Un Dia (One Day)” by Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bunny, and Tainy. Last week, the song debuted at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, marking Dua’s first entry and first No. 1 on any Latin chart.
Twenty years ago, however, it was a whole different story.
The Hot Latin Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming data, and digital sales, was dominated mainly by pop ballads and some tropical anthems. Unlike today’s Ozuna and Anuel, some of the chart-toppers in the year 2000 were Chayanne, Thalia and Marc Anthony, to name a few.
By this time, many Latin artists, including Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, and Ricky Martin, were making successful crossovers to mainstream and not shying away from singing in English, ultimately putting the new “Latin boom” on the forefront.
