Giants weighing need for starting pitcher
A lot of talk has surfaced that the Giants will need a No. 2 starter behind Madison Bumgarner to improve their playoff run. Indeed, the team has spoken with the Phillies about Cole Hamels, sources confirmed Tuesday, but isn’t in a desperate position to cut a deal.
The Giants consider their rotation deeper this year, if only because Chris Heston and Matt Cain weren’t part of last year’s stretch drive, and Heston certainly has been pitching like a No. 2 starter in his rookie season.
Manager Bruce Bochy commended Heston for pitching a quick seventh inning after the Brewers made Monday’s opener a one-run game, adding, “That’s the growth of Chris Heston.
