Better Call Saul Season 6 Starts Filming In Early 2021
Better Call Saul season 6 is slated to start filming in early 2021. Better Call Saul is the spin-off prequel series to Breaking Bad that follows the life and early career of con artist attorney Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk) in the years before he encounters Walter White. The show tracks Goodman's moral decline as he transforms from earnest yet down-on-his-luck Jimmy McGill to the greedy "criminal" lawyer Saul Goodman. The cast includes many familiar faces from Breaking Bad, such as chameleonic drug kingpin Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and elderly hitman Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), as well as fresh blood like Saul's love interest Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) and cartel soldier Nacho Varga (Michael Mando).
Like its predecessor, Better Call Saul has received critical acclaim and grown more popular as the series progresses. Odenkirk's performance remains as fun and clever as ever while also offering a more nuanced look into the damaged soul behind Saul's shady ethical decisions. Much of the adulation goes to the show's steady, understated pace compared to Breaking Bad's pulse-pounding plotting, but even though Better Call Saul features fewer explosions, there seems to be no shortage of devastation ahead for its characters as it stretches into the final season.
Series co-star Giancarlo Esposito spoke to HeyUGuys about when fans can expect the final season to begin production. While creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould originally intended to start in September, Esposito confirmed they currently expect to get cameras rolling in March 2021. Esposito seems quite giddy when talking about getting back to work in Albuquerque, saying he's excited to see what Gould and the writers have in store. "We were slated to go in September, we now look like we'll be going in March. We have a brilliant team of writers, of course, so it's always exciting to think about getting back to work. We didn't get a chance to get back to work on season 6. I'm so excited for Vince and Peter, and Melissa Bernstein, our producer, to be going back to set sometime in March."
Since the last season filmed for five months and premiered another five months later, fans can ideally expect Better Call Saul season 6 to premiere sometime in early 2022, though that's likely to change. Season 5 left audiences with several incendiary cliffhangers, including an escalation in the war between Gus Fring and the viciously charming Lalo Salamanca. In addition to figuring out what happens to Saul (now going by his secret identity "Gene") in the black-and-white flash-forwards, fans also want to know what will happen to Kim and Nacho by the series end since the two characters don't appear in Breaking Bad.
Of course, Better Call Saul season 6 isn't the only TV production put on hold due to the pandemic. Many shows are on a nearly identical schedule, with pre-production currently underway and cameras set to roll early next year. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, for one, just announced filming will begin in January as the crew currently plow ahead with costume fittings and other pre-production tasks. While the delays have certainly frustrated fans, the extra time that TV crews have had due to the pandemic should ensure that shows like Better Call Saul will maintain or exceed their past seasons' tremendous quality.
