Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 Trailer Reveals August Release Date
A teaser for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 reveals the series will return on August 12. The animated show is one of several Star Trek offerings available on Paramount+, ViacomCBS Streaming's newly rebranded platform formerly known as CBS All Access. Other current programs include the live-action series Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. There are additional Star Trek shows in the works at the streamer as well, such as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a spinoff of Discovery that will focus on some of that series' characters.
Though Star Trek: Lower Decks is far from the only show available on Paramount+ for those who enjoy the franchise, it has its supporters. Season 1 premiered in August 2020, and many applauded the series' lighter, more comedic tone compared to some other Star Trek projects. Star Trek: Lower Decks released weekly until October, ending season 1 with 10 episodes. Season 2 was a part of the show's initial order in 2018, so viewers have been waiting for a premiere date announcement since the season 1 finale.
Now, Paramount+ has delivered, announcing Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 will premiere on August 12. The streamer also revealed the series has been renewed for season 3, which, like the previous seasons, will consist of 10 episodes. Though the video is fairly brief, it shows Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2 will have largely the same tone as season 1, leaning into the series' comedic sensibilities. In that way, Lower Decks stands out amid the larger franchise, offering audiences something different. It looks like season 2 will be just as enjoyable as the show's initial run, though viewers won't find out for sure until August 12.
That return month makes sense for the show, since season 1 premiered in August as well. ViacomCBS Streaming must have been pleased with the series' performance at that time of year if it's employing a similar strategy for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 2. The season 3 renewal comes as a welcome surprise and should give the show's writers and animators ample time to prepare. Audiences will also be able to watch season 2 without worrying about the series' future, which should increase their enjoyment of it. Hopefully the two new seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks continue what made season 1 a success, while bringing in new viewers as well.
