GM is working on an electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck

General Motors confirmed on Tuesday that it's working on an electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

The vehicle will be built in Detroit at the company's new flagship assembly plant for electric cars and is a part of a $2.2 billion investment by GM, the company said. The plant was recently renamed Factory Zero in 2020 in honor of the carmaker's goals to produce EVs and work toward zero carbon emissions.

The truck will be the next step in the company's plans for an "all-electric future" and is one of many electric vehicle plans the company has announced in recent months.

Last week, GM unveiled a $100,000 Hummer EV SUV that's expected to be available for purchase in the beginning of 2023. The electric Hummer, as well as an autonomous shuttle, called the Cruise Origin, are all being built at the Detroit factory.

In January, GM emphasized its plans to go all-electric by debuting a new logo just months after announcing it was investing $27 billion in EVs and autonomous technology through 2025.

The company plans to release 30 new electric cars within four years. All the vehicles will be powered by GM's new Ultium battery technology and built on a new EV platform.

GM said the electric Silverado will be able to go about 400 miles on a full charge. The car will likely compete with Ford's electric F-150 pickup truck,which is expected to hit the streets in 2022.

While GM did not offer a price point for the vehicle, the electric Hummer SUV is expected to cost roughly $106,000when it is released in 2023. The vehicle will have a 300 mile range on a full battery, as well as 830-horsepower.

Shares of GM rose about 4% in trading Tuesday following the Silverado announcement.
