Enjoy 24°C heat while you can before heavy rain batters UK

Britain is set bask in 24°C sunshine today, but make the most of it while you still can.

After some hazy conditions this morning, the UK is in for a bright spell, but this will make way for heavy gales and downpours over the weekend.

Despite some pretty dismal weather over August, Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern says the UK has been ‘much warmer than average for the first half of September’.

He says fog patches and poor visibility first thing this morning will clear the way for ‘a fine day, with warm sunny spells’.

The forecaster added: ‘It’ll be 23°C or 24°C in the South and in the high teens for the North.

‘And there’s plenty more fine weather to come in many places on Friday, with eastern Scotland, much of England and Wales seeing warm sunshine.’

But as a new weather front heads towards the country, Mr McGivern says it’s much less clear what will happen next.

He added: ‘It’s likely that there’ll be cloudy skies and showers this weekend, with a band of rain “becoming very messy”.’

The forecaster said it is ‘certainly not a wash-out everywhere’ and that things should clear up by the middle of the week.

He said there will be ‘warm, sunny spells by day’ with mist and fog overnight.

But it’s a different picture for west Scotland and Northern Ireland, which will pick up strong wind and heavy rain from a storm heading for Iceland and the Faroe Islands, the Sun reports.

Today’s forecast will be welcomed by Londoners who had to cope with relentless downpours on Tuesday.

Video footage shows drivers trying to make their way across a water-logged Tower Bridge, while Mile End Underground station was forced to close due to flooding.
