The Giants might have to lose a lot if they want to fix what ails them

I’m a New York Giants fan, and have been since I was a kid.

So I’m not just saying this lightly: As this team gets ready to play later tonight on Thursday Night Football, I know that it’s probably going to take a bunch of losses this season in order to cure what ails the franchise.

In this week’s Four Vets column, our Charles McDonald nailed it with his take on where the Giants stand — other than a standout secondary, there are too many questions elsewhere, from Daniel Jones’ still-present fumbling problem to an offensive line full that was supposed to improve to a head coach in his second year who forgot you can’t challenge a scoring play.

Long-term, there’s so much money tied up in future contracts. As McDonald wrote, “The Giants are structured to be a win-now team without the talent of a win-now team.”

Which brings us to the losing. All of that means either the Giants need to suddenly not be the team they were in Week 1 … or they’re going to have to lose a lot to jump-start a rebuild, one that could end up with a new front office that could want a new quarterback, coach, pretty much everything else.

I wouldn’t say I’m rooting for a full-on tank. It would be nice to see Jones put together some of the flashes of talent we’ve seen throwing and running, or for Saquon Barkley to be the RB he was before he tore his ACL (I do like the patience the franchise is taking), or for Kenny Golladay to end up being worth the money he received in free agency. At least the defense seems above average?

But if the losing continues on Thursday night and beyond? That might be the only option to give this franchise a restart it needs.
