Former Spurs boss says he would rather buy a season ticket at PL rival

Tim Sherwood has admitted that he would rather buy a season ticket at Elland Road than at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds have played the kind of swashbuckling football that has historically been associated with Tottenham.

While they have been defensively suspect on occasion since their promotion to the Premier League in 2020, their aggressive, front-foot approach has made them the team to watch for many neutrals. 

In contrast, Spurs seem to have moved away from their attacking approach since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in 2019. 

The Lilywhites were criticised for their negative style under Jose Mourinho and although it is still early in Nuno Espirito Santo’s reign, the former Wolves boss has already been questioned by some for his conservative tactics.

So, perhaps unsurprisingly, Sherwood has admitted that he would rather watch Bielsa’s men at Elland Road every week over seeing his former club in action in N17.

The former Spurs interim boss told Premier League Productions (12/09/21 at 4:05 pm): “It’s exciting to watch (Leeds’ football). 

“If I had to buy a season ticket at any club then I want to go there and watch Leeds every single week.

“It’s too expensive at Tottenham.”

While one can understand why some Spurs fans might be frustrated by our negative approach, it is also quite misleading to point to Leeds as a club we should be emulating.

While the likes of Leeds, Villa and Brighton were easier on the eye to watch than Spurs last season, the expectations at Tottenham are much higher. 

Spurs fans will simply not accept finishing in the bottom half of the table and regularly being on the end of thrashings. A better comparison would be Leicester, who I would argue are also moving towards an increasingly pragmatic style of play under Brendan Rodgers.
