Nikola to use German Iveco factory to begin building Tre heavy-duty electric trucks
The partnership between Iveco and battery electric vehicle manufacturer Nikola has taken its next step with its Ulm, Germany facility commencing production of the Nikola Tre heavy-duty EV by the end of the year.
In addition to the electric battery model, a fuel cell electric vehicle prototype of the Tre has also been displayed and is expected to enter production by the end of 2023.
Gerrit Marx, chief executive of the Iveco Group, said: “Thanks to Iveco’s proven expertise and established footprint we have provided a platform upon which Nikola’s technology can thrive.
“Now our focus is on ensuring the success of this operation and jointly taking the lead when it comes to climate-neutral long- and short-haul heavy-duty transport.”

The Ulm base features a final assembly process that has been designed for electric vehicles.
Iveco said the site represented joint investment by the two companies and involves 160 suppliers in the process.
The production line is anticipated to manufacture around 1,000 units per shift per year and is expected to undergo progressive ramp-up.
Based on Iveco’s S-Way truck platform, the Nikola Tre features advanced electric and fuel cell technology, with key components supplied by Bosch.
“This is yet another important milestone for Nikola as we execute on our strategy and vision to be a global leader in zero-emissions transportation solutions,” said Nikola chief executive Mark Russell.
