The Mets fell to the Cardinals on Wednesday night by a score of 11-4. Tylor Megill had a rough start, allowing six earned runs in three innings, and Pete Alonso was robbed of a home run by Lars Nootbaar with runners on the corners in the seventh inning when the score was 8-4. If the Mets still wish to make the playoffs, they need to be perfect or near-perfect on the final 15-game stretch of the season. Luis Rojas remained optimistic about the Mets’ playoff chances, saying in the postgame interview, “we still have a chance, and it’s real that we still have a chance.” The Mets will start a crucial series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night at 7:10 PM EST.

Mets News:

Jeff McNeil spoke about his struggles this season at the plate in a postgame interview. He mentioned that his hitting, “is not where I want to be, where I expect to be,” and he hopes to have a strong finish to the season. McNeil is currently batting .250 on the season, and he was one hit shy of a cycle in Wednesday night’s game.

Corey Oswalt pitched a scoreless rehab inning for the St. Lucie Mets (A-), allowing only one hit in the appearance.

Tylor Megill may be shut down for the rest of the season because he has pitched 49 1/3 innings beyond his career high. When asked, Megill responded to potentially being shut down by saying, “It is what it is,” but “I’d like to keep throwing.”

A Newsday report was comfirmed by another source, but not yet the organization, that Sandy Alderson will be the team’s president for the 2022 season.

When Javier Báez was asked if he would stay with the team beyond this season, he did not give a definitive answer, saying, “we’ll see.”

Brandon Nimmo will be back in the lineup on Friday barring a setback. His last game played was September 4th against the Nationals.

Julio Urías got his 18th win yesterday, leading the major leagues in that category.

In the ninth inning of the Yankees-Orioles game, umpire Tim Timmons ejected the grounds crew for causing a disturbance during the game. Shortly after, Brett Gardner hit a two-run single to give the Yankees a 4-3 lead.

Mike Trout seems to be out for the season with a calf injury. Angels manager, Joe Maddon, said he would be “very surprised” if Trout returned this season.

On This Date in Mets History

On this date in 1976, Jerry Koosman reached 20 wins for his first and only time as a Met against the Cardinals in a 4-1 win. Koosman pitched a complete game and struck out 13 batters. When interviewed about the accomplishment, Koosman said to reporters, “It is the night of my life. This is what I have waited for since I was 16 years old.” After the game, the Mets celebrated the accomplishment by delivering champagne to the locker room.

On this date in 1996, Lance Johnson tallied his 20th triple of the year at Shea Stadium by hitting the ball into Shea’s extra wide center field. With the milestone, Johnson became the first Met to hit 20 triples in a season and the first National League player since Willie Mays in 1957.
