San Rafael police release video in Newsom recall assault case
San Rafael police have released a video of an alleged attacker at a pro-recall rally as they continue to seek leads in the case.
The attack happened at about 3 p.m. Sunday on the Coleman pedestrian bridge that goes over Highway 101 at Belle Avenue, San Rafael police Sgt. Justin Graham said.
A group of pro-recall supporters gathered on the overpass to post banners ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, Graham said. The attacker allegedly walked on the bridge and began cutting down banners with a knife.
He was confronted by the victim and the two men began to argue and push each other. The attacker allegedly punched the victim several times and knocked him to the ground. The victim was transported to a hospital.
The video does not show the assault, but it captured the attacker arriving and leaving in a black Ford Ranger pickup truck with an extended cab. The truck is believed to be a 2001 to 2011 model, Graham said.
The footage shows the man driving into the Coleman Elementary School parking lot, exiting the vehicle and putting on a light green shirt before walking toward the pedestrian crossing.
Four minutes later, he ran back to his truck and drove north on Belle Avenue.
The attacker was described as White, 25 to 35 years old and about 5 feet, 11 inches tall with shoulder-length curly red-blonde hair, police said. Aside from the green shirt, he wore blue jeans and a blue baseball cap.
