How do I tell my boyfriend that anal sex is too painful for me to do it again?

He has been suggesting it for a while, but I’ve always said no. I just don’t see the attraction.
But as it was his birthday, I decided I would give it a try. I thought it would be good to push the boundaries a little and hoped that we would both enjoy the experience together.
Instead it turned out to be the night from hell.
I was in pain the entire time, and going to the loo afterwards was very uncomfortable.
My boyfriend has no idea I didn’t enjoy it, and has asked to make it a more regular thing.
I don’t want to let him down, but there is no way I can go through that again.
