Which actor and actress nominated for the Screen Actors Guild awards in supporting roles will take home the prize for their standout performance?
While they might not be at center stage in their respective movies, the nominees for Best Supporting Actor and Actress at the Screen Actors Guild represent some of the best performances of the year. From scene-stealers to those smaller characters that elevate the story, it is a collection of standout roles.
As fans wait to see which of the actors and actresses will take home the prize, the award-centered GoldDerby has calculated the odds each of the nominees in both the male and the female category have at winning the trophy.
Though George Clooney's The Tender Bar didn't get much attention this awards season, Ben Affleck was singled out by the SAG Awards for his supporting role. The movie follows a young boy living with his extended family while pursuing his dreams of being a writer under the guidance of his uncle, played by Affleck.
The role is an ideal highlight for Affleck as an actor as it allows him to be likable, funny, and touching as this mentor figure. However, with the movie getting little recognition, it's not likely he'll be a dark horse winner.
Jared Leto's performances tend to be quite divisive, and House of Gucci is certainly no exception to that. The Ridley Scott movie follows the inner fighting among the Gucci family that brought their hold over their fashion empire to an end. Leto plays the family's embarrassing black sheep, Paolo Gucci.
While some found the performance to be funny and a highlight of the movie, others found it cartoonish and distracting. In fact, along with his SAG nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Leto also received a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor for the same role.
The Best Supporting Actor category can sometimes highlight terrific performances that are quite brief in the overall movie. Such is the case with Bradley Cooper's hilarious role in Licorice Pizza. The coming-of-age story from Paul Thomas Anderson features Cooper as Jon Peters in a role that amounts to about 10 minutes of screen time.
Cooper is a big star who stands out in any project that he is a part of but it is fun to see such a small yet wild performance getting recognized. While it seems unlikely he'll pull off a win, GoldDerby places his odds in the middle of the pack.
The indie drama CODA has become the underdog contender during awards season and Tony Kotsur has been at the forefront of the movie's buzz. The movie follows a high school girl who is the only non-deaf person in her family as she pursues her love of singing. Kotsur plays her eccentric yet loving father.
Kotsur's nomination as the first deaf male nominee is already ground-breaking. His crowd-pleasing performance that is filled with heart and humor could propel him to be the surprise winner of the night, despite his stiff competition.
The Western drama The Power of the Dog features a number of stand-out performances, with many accolades being bestowed upon its youngest cast member. Kodi Smit-McPhee plays a reserved and intelligent boy who becomes the target of a cruel rancher (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Smit-McPhee does wonderful work crafting perhaps the movie's most complicated role. He manages to keep much about the character hidden until the end while also giving a rich and engrossing performance.
Cate Blanchett is the kind of actor who seems to be a part of the award conversation whenever she appears in a movie. Among the star-studded cast of Guillermo del Toro's noir thriller Nightmare Alley, Blanchette stands out in a captivating role.
Blanchette's nomination as a psychiatrist who partners with Bradley Cooper's mentalist to pull off a con was a bit of a surprise. While Blanchette pulls off the elegant yet intimidating role very well, it is likely not going to be enough to beat out her fellow nominees.
Though highly acclaimed upon its release, Passing has been largely overlooked during the awards season. However, Ruth Negga's performance rightly received recognition in the period story in which she plays a Black woman posing as a white woman in the 1920s.
Negga's nuanced yet powerful performance is incredibly compelling and continues to show she is one of the most underrated actors working today. Unfortunately, the small movie and lack of overall recognition suggest she will miss out on taking home the trophy.
Kenneth Branagh's Belfast is one of the most charming movies of the year and another featuring a terrific ensemble at its center. However, SAG has highlighted Caitriona Balfe's endearing performance as the mother of a working-class family living in Northern Ireland during the Troubles of the 1960s.
Balfe is very much the heart of the movie and grounds the role of a mother who is unsure what the best course of action is for the sake of her family. Though other awards have favored other performances in the movie, it is possible she could be an unexpected winner at the SAG Awards.
Another cast member from The Power of the Dog who has been nominated is Kirsten Dunst. She plays a single mother who falls in love with a kind rancher (Jesse Plemons) and starts a life with him. But she soon becomes tormented by her husband's brother (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Dunst has been a big name in Hollywood for a number of years and fans are happy to see her getting recognition for one of her acclaimed performances. She is the most sympathetic person in the movie and having the audience root for her mistreated character could make her a favorite to win.
Every so often, the supporting categories highlight a new talent who came into the movie and stole the show. Ariana DeBose fits that role with her breakout performance in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story where she plays Anita, the spirited and strong friend of Maria (Rachel Zegler).
DeBose gets a chance to wow audiences with her incredible singing talents in the movie. However, her performance is so much more than just musical abilities as she is funny, heartbreaking, and brings a spark to the movie. It is just the kind of supporting performance that these awards love to highlight.
