Finance expert explains why Tottenham will be ‘keen’ on new Champions League rule
Kieran Maguire believes Tottenham will be delighted with UEFA’s plans to give extra Champions League places to leagues with strong success in Europe.
Governing body UEFA recently confirmed additional spots will be awarded to the two best-performing nations from 2024, which would see the competition expand from 32 to 36 teams.
Had the change been implemented this season, it would have handed England a fifth Champions League place while also expanding the Netherlands’ current qualification spots.
Tottenham and Arsenal will have likely been one of the clubs most concerned by that extra place, with Antonio Conte’s side one of the teams that has been bouncing in and out of the Premier League top four this term.
Maguire feels the new format, which could net teams up to £150 million, will be of great interest to Spurs who are looking to make their return to the Champions League following a two-year absence.
He told Football Insider: “It is a backstop for the likes of Spurs. Qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League generates more money than winning the Europa League, and the upper limit is £150m.
“We can argue about the fairness of it but this is why Tottenham would understandably be so keen to have these insurance options in place.”

England’s dominance across Europe in recent seasons has been clear to see and it will likely earn the Premier League another Champions League place when the new format rolls around.
It could massively benefit Tottenham as they have been one of the sides hovering between fourth and just below in the last couple of seasons.
But it will add another incentive to the other clubs in that area of the division if there is another spot in the competition up for grabs.
