Report: Premier League rival now leading race for Sam Johnstone ahead of Spurs
According to The Athletic, West Ham United are now leading the race to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is also allegedly wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.
Reports over recent weeks have indicated that Spurs are confident of winning the race for Johnstone, whose contract at the Hawthorns runs out in the summer (The Sun).
Alasdair Gold said on his YouTube channel last month that the England goalkeeper is likely to replace Pierluigi Gollini as Lloris’ understudy, with Spurs not expected to take up the option to sign the Italian permanently.
Football Insider subsequently reported that Johnstone has told his friends that he is keen on a switch to Tottenham and believes he could eventually succeed Lloris as the club’s number one.
However, this information has been contradicted by TuttoMercatoWeb, who claimed earlier this month that Spurs wish to extend Gollini’s loan spell at the club.
The Athletic have now stated that despite Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Johnstone, it is the Hammers who have now moved into pole position ahead of their London rivals in the race for the Baggies number one.

Johnstone would tick a lot of boxes for us, given that he has experience in the Premier League and is homegrown. However, the 29-year-old might believe that he has a better chance of being the number one at the London Stadium than he does at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
