Man Utd could move for 22-goal/assist star amid Ronaldo transfer request - report
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will urge the hierarchy to sign Ajax forward Antony amid Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to leave the club, The Mirror reports.
Ronaldo had a terrific homecoming season with the Red Devils last term with 24 goals across all competitions, but the club still failed to qualify for the Champions League.
This is reportedly one of the prime reasons behind his desire to move on. If his wish is granted, it is claimed that Ten Hag will push the board to land the services of Antony.
United were put off by the £70 million valuation from Ajax earlier this summer, but Ten Hag will want the club to splash the cash on him if Ronaldo heads out.
Ronaldo is due to report for pre-season training alongside several teammates on Monday. Ten Hag is expected to hold talks to find out whether he is ready to honour his contract.
Our view:
Ronaldo’s desire to leave United has come out of the blue, considering he was looking forward to working with Ten Hag towards the end of the previous campaign.
However, the request is justifiable. The Portuguese has featured in the Champions League for 19 straight seasons, and does not see himself playing Europa League football.
United are still determined to keep him for the final year of his contract, but it is unlikely that the club or Ten Hag would force him to stay if he has his sights on moving on.
Antony would be a quality addition to the squad if Ronaldo leaves, but the 22-year-old is a specialist right-winger. He won’t be a like-for-like replacement for the 37-year-old.
The Brazilian will add more creativity for United after an impressive 22 goal involvements for Ajax last term, but Ten Hag will still need to find a solution up front for next season.
He could possibly trial Marcus Rashford from the role during pre-season alongside Anthony Martial. The duo could have the chance to revive their respective careers after average 2021/22 campaigns.
