Former Health Official at Estiqlal Hospital in Afghan Capital Killed by Unknown Gunmen
Taleb Hossein Shirzad, the former chief nursing officer at Istiqlal State Hospital, was killed by unidentified gunmen, according to sources in Kabul.
Sources say that the gunmen killed Shirzad in his vehicle on Sunday, July 31, in the Karta-e-Se area of Kabul.
The murder of the health official, the source said, is still being investigated for causes. Nevertheless, the source asserted that this young man’s death might have been the result of a targeted killing.
According to several internal media outlets’ sources, Shirzad was called into the Khair Khana area in Kabul and killed by unidentified people after accepting their invitation.
Relatives of Shirzad claim that the Taliban recently sacked him, after five years of service in Afghanistan’s health sector.
Arif Rahmani, a former member of the Wolesi Jirga, the lower chamber of Afghanistan’s bicameral parliament, tweeted Shirzad’s picture on Twitter in response to his death and wrote that he was “killed in broad daylight inside his private car.”
Taliban officials have yet to respond to Shirzad’s death.
Despite the Taliban’s claims of security, there have been more attacks and target killings in Afghanistan since they took control.
