Sports Briefs: Schools heed warnings as heat postpones games

Tuesday’s excessive heat forced the postponement of several sports events at Marin County high schools. With temperatures hovering close to 110 degrees in some areas, administrators decided it would be dangerous for athletes to compete.

The first day after Labor Day presented a fairly light sports slate, with football, soccer, cross country and water polo already not on the schedule. Golf, tennis and field hockey were reportedly the only sports affected, with roughly nine events that were rescheduled, some for Wednesday, and some for a date as yet to be decided. There were no reports of volleyball matches being postponed due to the heat.

More events could be postponed this week, with temperatures forecast to remain near 100 degrees Wednesday and Thursday. The forecast calls for temperatures to dip into the 80s in time for Saturday afternoon, when four football games highlight the high school sports schedule in Marin County.

Golf

Redwood and Tam braved the heat at Meadow Club on Tuesday as the Giants rolled to a 166-294 victory. Redwood’s Taylor Bridges took medalist honors with a 3-over 39 and Imani Kathirya was close behind with a 40. The Hawks were led by Lola Spendov with a hard-fought 52.

Marin County Club, winner of the East Bay Championship, is currently competing at Cold Springs Country Club for the Women’s Nine Hole Golf Association regional crown. Marin defeated rival Sequoyah Country Club 107-112 in a battle of division winners on August 23 to advance to the regionals.

Marin’s lineup includes Noel Stubblefield, Jill Lineman, Linda Hope, Juanita Rivera, Abby Johnson and Karen Dolkas, as well as nine other players who competed in team play.

Girls volleyball

Malia Parsons posted 16 digs, nine kills and two aces as Tam swept past Montgomery on Tuesday, 25-19, 25-23, 25-13. Katherine Moriarty had 11 kills and six digs while Sachi Houser added six kills and two digs. Setter Wesley Slavin handed out 34 assists.
