Therese Coffey’s Dr Dre alarm awkwardly interrupts her first interview as health secretary
The country’s new health secretary has made sure to put a doctor at the forefront of her first interview in the role… but it’s not one you might think.
Therese Coffey was announced in the job last night amid Liz Truss’s dramatic cabinet reshuffle as new Prime Minister.
Speaking on LBC this morning, Ms Coffey was discussing her political aims when she was forced to pause suddenly.
‘Can I ask you a question about residences – oh, are you alright over there?’ LBC presenter Nick Ferrari asked.
The sounds of Dr Dre’s 1999 hit Still D.R.E with Snoop Dogg could then be heard emitting from Ms Coffey’s handbag.
Apologising profusely, she then explained it was an alarm rather than a phone call.
‘I’ve just realised my alarm is going off on my phone, you’re getting a bit of Dr Dre,’ she said.
‘It’s just an 8 o’clock alarm, sorry.’
She fiddled with her phone to end the noise before the interview was then able to continue.
Mr Ferrari had responded: ‘That’s fantastic – Dr Coffey with Dr Dre as the health secretary. It just gets better and better.’
Others on Twitter responded with hilarity to the bizarre interruption, but others suggested it could be a tactic to ‘get views’.
Another mused: ‘I hope she knows Dr Dre isn’t that kind of doctor.’
‘The Doctor is in!’, exclaimed another, while another branded the new health secretary ‘Dr Tre’.
Ms Truss had wasted no time in appointing her cabinet last night.
The new prime minister enlisted Jacob Rees-Mogg – whose net worth has been estimated at being around £100 million – with the business, energy and industrial strategy brief.
Kwasi Kwarteng is the new chancellor, while James Cleverly has been promoted to Truss’ old position as foreign secretary.
The new PM’s former leadership rival, Suella Braverman, has taken over as home secretary, after Priti Patel yesterday announced her ‘choice’ to return to the backbenches.
The majority of the old cabinet were unceremoniously axed, while backers of other leadership rivals, particularly Rishi Sunak, appeared to have not been offered an olive branch by the UK’s new leader.
