Thrifty mum saves hundreds on son’s clothes by ironing Nike logos onto Primark shirts

A thrifty mum claims to have saved a fortune on clothes for her teenage son by ironing Nike logos onto Primark clothes to create convincing fakes.

Kat Burman, 37, says she doesn’t see the sense in spending loads on sports gear when her son ‘only cares about playing football and running around with his friends’.

To solve the problem, the Northampton beautician invested in a £300 Cricut machine – which makes iron-on designs- and used it to spice up her son’s wardrobe.

Putting her upholstery skills to good use, Kat created fake Nike ticks and North Face logos and ironed them on to £2.50 Primark t-shirts, as well as her son’s plain PE bag.

Savvy Kat also used the hack to alter a genuine Nike coat, covering over a pink logo with a white motif.

Sharing before and after photos of some simple shirts in a TikTok video, the money-saving mother wrote: ‘Just a mum trying to save pennies with a teenage son.’

Kat says she first got the idea during the pandemic, when after browsing DIY videos on YouTube she decided to start decorating face masks during the summer holidays.

After perfecting her craft she then moved onto clothes, and the results speak for themselves.

‘Honestly, nobody can tell the difference and he loves them,’ she said.

Her teenage son also has ADHD, making him more particular when it comes to fabrics and ‘tags’ on clothes, she said.

Cricut machines have become an online sensation on recent years, with th #cricut hashtaag racking up 3.9 billion views on TikTok. Related hashtag #Cricutprojects also has 1.3 billion, and #cricuttutorials has 288.9 million.

Kat’s clever hack comes amid a cost-of-living crisis during which many people are looking to save, with things like clothes and accessories likely to be the first things people will be scaling back on as energy bills are set to skyrocket.

And with men’s shirts on the Nike website ranging from around £16.95 to a whopping £449.95, it’s looking like Kat’s Cricut machine may turn out to be an extremely savvy investment.
