International quit Manchester United to boost World Cup hopes - report

Alex Telles has revealed he left Manchester United to bolster his chances of the international call-up for the upcoming World Cup.

The Brazil international joined Sevilla on a season-long loan deal this summer. 

He joined Man United from Porto two years ago in a £13.6 million transfer.

Speaking to Brazilian outlet TNT Sports (via Manchester Evening News), Telles was asked if the World Cup was the main reason behind his switch in the summer.

He replied: “Obviously. If I say no, I’ll be lying.

“I really believe in preparation. I know I’m on the radar – I know I was called for the last call-ups.

“So obviously having more and more minutes, playing as much as possible. I’m exclusively focused on that preparation.

“I know it depends a lot on what I do at my club for me to be willing and always at a high level, so if I get called up for the national team, to be prepared.

“Having minutes, having games, and I think that here I have a lot to grow and evolve. And so be prepared that if I get called up to the national team, give my best.”

The World Cup is the biggest stage for players who want to represent their country.

It is completely understandable that the 29-year-old was searching for first-team football this year.

Telles largely played a role of a second-choice left-back with Luke Shaw ahead of him in the pecking order.

With the arrival of Tyrell Malacia, the competition grew even hotter.

If he had stayed at Old Trafford, he would be serving as a third choice for that spot. 

However, his time in Spain has not started on a positive note.

Sevilla are currently 17th in the La Liga table, having picked up just a solitary point in four games.

Telles has made three league appearances, with two coming as a substitute.

He had a torrid time against Manchester City in the Champions League, lasting just 57 minutes before he was substituted.

This run of form won’t do Tellles any favours as he faces stiff competition from Alex Sandro and Guilherme Arana for the starting role in the international team.
