1/OFF showcases "scarf couture" at Amsterdam Fashion Week
Amsterdam-based fashion brand 1/OFF debuted its Spring Summer 2023 collection at Amsterdam Fashion Week, which contained clothes crafted from repurposed scarfs, denim and tablecloths.
The Dutch brand debuted its most recent collection at Amsterdam Fashion Week at the city's Contemporary Art Space in Amsterdam Noord.
"Our collection is based on four types of vintage," said 1/OFF founder Renée van Wijngaarden. "For each type, we show a myriad of possibilities to transform the same piece into new forms."
"It's evolution in action," he continued. "As new mutations keep coming up, new species come into existence."
Its Spring Summer 2023 collection was divided into four "worlds" each incorporating different types of repurposed vintage, which were differentiated throughout the show through their own styling, choreography and music.
"The goal of the show is to introduce more people to our clothing. And to show how things can be done differently, that the end of something can also be the beginning of something beautiful," said van Wijngaarden.
The first of the four parts was titled Space Denim and saw repurposed denim patched together to form, trench coats, patchwork dresses, wrapped footwear and mini skirts with double waistbands – similar to that of styles popularised by Parisian fashion label Y/Project.
Tenue de Table followed shortly after the all-denim looks presenting garments crafted from vintage tablecloths.
Oversized trousers and cropped shirts with extended arms featured broderie anglaise detailing, a 19th-century needlework technique characterised by decorative rounded and oval holes.
Brightly coloured scarves wrapped around the bodies of models signalled the third part of the show. Vintage were scarves printed with 1/OFF branding and sewn together to form dresses, bags and halter tops in what the brand titled Scarf Couture.
The final part of the show, titled Shape Shifters, saw 1/OFF repurpose vintage men's suiting, which was tailored, altered, cut and distorted to create contemporary and feminine silhouettes.
Amsterdam Fashion Week is also home to Dutch deadstock designer and upcyler Duran Lantink, who showcased a collaboration with Steve Madden at Amsterdam's Moulin Rouge during the city's fashion week.
Francon presented its collection during Amsterdam Fashion Week in the MVRDV-designed Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in the nearby city of Rotterdam.
