Firefighters dig a channel to rescue horse stuck in sink hole
A struggling horse stepped into a sink hole and ended up having to be rescued by firefighters.
Photos show the animal up to its neck in the boggy ground near Darlington in County Durham.
In one photo, its legs were not visible at all as rescuers tried to coax it out using a bridle.
In the end, firefighters from County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue managed to get it back to safety by digging out a channel.
This created a step at the field in Cockfield Fell, which the horse could use to hop out of the hole on its own.
It was then seen running free after its lucky escape.

The fire service tweeted yesterday: ‘Horse in a ‘hole’ – lotta trouble!
‘Our crews came to the aid of this horse who had become stuck in a sink hole.
‘Our firefighters dug out a channel to create a step which assisted the horse in self rescuing & was able to get back on its hooves.
‘Great result all round!’
