Kabul Explosion Leaves Roughly 50 People Dead and Injured

The Friday explosion of Wazir Akbar Khan in northern Kabul, the Afghan capital, resulted in 7 fatalities and 41 injuries, said the Taliban spokesperson for Kabul Police. The explosion was followed by national and international outrage and reactions.

According to a tweet by the Taliban spokesperson for Kabul Police, Khalid Zadran, the explosion happened as a congregation of worshippers was exiting the Wazir Akbar Khan mosque.

Mr. Zadran stated that all of the deceased, particularly worshipers, were civilians as an explosives-laden vehicle detonated in front of the mosque.

Many Taliban officials were reportedly among the hundreds of worshipers who attend Friday prayers at the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan congregational mosque.

Reactions on the national and international levels have been sparked by the explosion in front of the Wazir Akbar Khan mosque, which left civilians killed and injured.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has expressed its condolences to the families of those killed in the Wazir Akbar Khan mosque explosion and said that it also brings back “bitter” memories of previous explosions and terrorist attacks.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the US Embassy for Afghanistan in Qatar have both condemned the explosion attack in the Afghan capital. CENTCOM stated that there is no justification for the attack on worshippers.

In reaction to the explosion, the former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, stated that the explosion was a “terrorist” attack that is in conflict with both human and Islamic values.

Targeting mosques and worshipers is an unforgivable act, according to Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government’s spokesman, who also stated this on Twitter.

The explosion on Friday has not yet been attributed to a group, but the Khurasan branch of the Islamic State (ISKP) has previously claimed responsibility for other explosions of a similar nature that occurred in Kabul and the majority of Afghanistan’s provinces.
